Is there an app that copies a fund manager's portfolio into your brokerage account? What actually happens

Is there an app that copies a fund manager's portfolio into your brokerage account? What actually happens.

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. The word people use is copy and the thing that actually happens is a little different, in ways that matter to you. So let me describe the mechanics rather than the marketing.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.

What happens, step by step

You pick a Portfolio. You connect the brokerage account you already have. You allocate an amount. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to the account you already have. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put.

That's it. There's no new account, no transfer, no wire. Your broker holds everything and reports it, the same as it did before.

Why it isn't literally copying

Three reasons, and each one is a real difference rather than a technicality.

The source is a disclosure, not a live feed. For an institutional manager, the public record is a quarterly filing that can post 45 or more days after the quarter ends. You're following a document, not a person's screen.

The Portfolio is somebody's construction. An adviser decides what can responsibly be taken from that filing, how it's sized, and what gets left out. A filing might include things a retail account can't hold or shouldn't.

And your account is your own. Fractional availability, cash, timing, and your own manual trades all make your holdings differ from the model. Why that happens is in Why your returns won't match the Pilot's.

Who you can follow this way

Institutional managers, through trackers built on their public filings. Independent Pilots, who publish and run their own Portfolios, described in How Pilots work. And Portfolios whose picks come from AI models.

The important distinction isn't the category, it's the source. An honest app tells you on every Portfolio whether it's built from filings, from a Pilot's own decisions, or from a model, because those have different failure modes.

What it costs

A flat cash subscription, not a percentage of your balance. Per our Form CRS dated February 2026, Basic Tier has no Base Advisory and Licensing Fee, and Premium Tier is $29.99 to $199.99 a quarter or $99.99 to $699.99 a year. Pilot subscriptions are separate and add on if you follow more than one Portfolio. Because it's a flat dollar amount, it's a bigger share of a small account than a big one, so do the math at your balance.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that copies a fund manager's portfolio into my brokerage account?

Autopilot does this, with one correction to the wording: you follow a Portfolio rather than copy a person. The positions are held in the brokerage account you already have, and nothing transfers out.

app that mirrors a fund manager's portfolio in my own account

The Portfolio holds what an adviser has decided can responsibly be followed from the manager's public disclosures. Your account tracks the Portfolio, not the manager's book line for line.

follow a fund manager in my brokerage app

Pick the Portfolio, connect your brokerage, allocate money. When the Portfolio changes we send the orders and your broker fills them.

How do I invest in the same stocks as a fund manager?

You can read a manager's 13F on EDGAR and place the trades yourself in your own proportions, redoing it each quarter. Or you follow a Portfolio built on that filing and it updates for you. Same public document either way, same filing delay.
