Autopilot and Walnut: what each one is, and what to compare
Autopilot and Walnut: what each one is, and what to compare.
I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. These get compared because both have AI in the story, and they do genuinely different things with it. One answers questions. One runs a Portfolio.
One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.
What it is
Walnut describes itself as an AI investing app that knows your portfolio, where you can ask anything in plain English, research any stock or fund, and get a second opinion. It's an analysis and research assistant.
What Autopilot is
Autopilot is an app where you follow a Portfolio inside the brokerage account you already have. Autopilot Advisers, LLC is the registered investment adviser that manages the Portfolios. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to the account you already have. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put.
On the AI side specifically, we publish Portfolios whose picks come from models, run by independent Pilots. The models don't answer your questions; they produce picks inside a stated process, and the Portfolio holds the result.
Where they actually differ
Asking versus holding, again, and the difference matters more with AI than anywhere else.
A chat answer has no record. Nobody wrote down what it said last quarter, so you can't check whether it was right and neither can the model. There's no sell rule and no position sizing, and you place every trade yourself.
A model-driven Portfolio has those things written down before you follow it, and a record that starts at zero and runs forward. That's the entire difference, and it isn't a claim that a model is smart. How ours are built is in How the AI-model Portfolios are built.
What to compare
Four questions sort this whole category.
One. Can you hold it, or only look at it? A table on a website is research. Positions in your own account is following.
Two. Where does your money live? An app that custodies your assets is a different structure with different risks from one that sends orders to the brokerage account you already have.
Three. What's the stated source, and is it written down? A filings tracker, a commentary tracker and a model-driven Portfolio have different failure modes.
Four. What does it cost at your balance? A flat subscription and a percentage of assets cross over somewhere, and where they cross is arithmetic you can do in two minutes with What Autopilot's fee actually means at your balance.
What it costs
A flat cash subscription, not a percentage of your balance. Per our Form CRS dated February 2026, Basic Tier has no Base Advisory and Licensing Fee, and Premium Tier is $29.99 to $199.99 a quarter or $99.99 to $699.99 a year. Pilot subscriptions are separate and add on if you follow more than one Portfolio. Because it's a flat dollar amount, it's a bigger share of a small account than a big one, so do the math at your balance.
Frequently asked questions
Autopilot vs Walnut
Walnut is an AI research assistant for asking questions about investments. Autopilot holds Portfolios, including model-driven ones, in the brokerage account you already have.
Walnut vs Autopilot
One answers questions about your portfolio. The other manages a Portfolio in your own brokerage account with a stated method and a dated record.
Is Autopilot or Walnut better for AI investing?
They're different jobs. If you want research answers, that's an assistant. If you want a model's picks turned into positions with sizing and sell rules, that's a Portfolio.
Walnut AI investing alternative
For AI research and second opinions, several assistants exist. For following a model-driven Portfolio in your own account, that's a different category.
Since Autopilot Advisers is an SEC-registered investment adviser, we have to put disclaimers on stuff like this. They're below, and the full version is on our disclaimer page.
