The ChatGPT stock portfolio experiment that never stopped: Autopilot's GPT Portfolio, live since May 2023, and how to follow it in your own brokerage

How Autopilot's GPT Portfolio has run live since 2023, what it is not, and how to follow it in your brokerage.

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. In 2023 everyone ran a ChatGPT stock portfolio experiment: pick some stocks with the model, watch for a few weeks, write it up. Ours kept going. The GPT Portfolio has run in real client accounts since May 15, 2023, with a public fact sheet, and you can follow it in the brokerage account you already have. Here's what it is, where its performance actually lives, and what following it means.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.

The experiment

The academic spark was a 2023 paper by Alejandro Lopez-Lira and Yuehua Tang, "Can ChatGPT Forecast Stock Price Movements? Return Predictability and Large Language Models," which asked whether a large language model could read news and say anything useful about which way a stock would move. Lopez-Lira, a finance professor, runs Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, and that lab is the Pilot of record for the GPT Portfolio: it designs the process, a scoring system built on GPT, and runs the model. Autopilot Advisers, LLC manages the Portfolio. The model picks; a documented process turns the picks into a Portfolio; your account follows it. Since then the lab has run the same kind of process on other models, so there are now four AI-model Portfolios, GPT, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek, and the differences between them are in How the AI-model Portfolios are built: what GPT, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek actually do, who runs them, and how to follow one.

Where the performance lives

Not here. I don't put returns in articles, because a return without its date, its drawdown, and its net-of-fees line is a headline, not a record. The GPT Portfolio fact sheet shows what real client accounts following the Portfolio did from May 15, 2023 onward, gross and modeled net, with maximum drawdown, volatility, and a date on every figure. That's a live composite of follower accounts, not a backtest and not a screenshot of a chat. Read the drawdown before the return; how to read the rest is in How to read a Portfolio's track record before you follow it.

Why this is different from asking ChatGPT yourself

You can open a chat model and ask for ten stocks right now, and people do. What that gives you has no record, no sell rule, no position sizes, and no execution: nobody wrote down what it said last quarter, and you still have to place every trade and remember to do it again. A Portfolio has all of those things written down before you follow it, a date on every figure, and orders that actually reach your account. It isn't that the model is smarter inside our process than inside your chat window. It's that a process you can inspect is a different object from an answer you got once.

How following works

You connect the brokerage you already use, pick the GPT Portfolio, and set how much of the account follows it. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to that account. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put. One Pilot subscription from Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs covers all four AI-model Portfolios, and it's separate from the platform tiers, which I laid out in How much does it cost to follow a portfolio? Autopilot's subscription in dollars, the two layers, and the math at your balance. You're never trading at the same time as the Portfolio, and your holdings won't match it exactly, because account size, brokerage support for fractional shares, and trade timing all change what lands in your account.

The honest part

A model that picks stocks is a Pilot like any other. Some Pilots go up for years. Some Pilots are flat for years. The GPT Portfolio has a record long enough to read, which is the whole reason to prefer it over a fresh experiment, and the record is the only thing that should decide it, not the name on it. Whether AI picking is "legit" at all, and how the four models compare, is in Is AI stock picking legit, and which model is best? How to check instead of guessing.

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT stock portfolio

Autopilot's GPT Portfolio is a Portfolio whose stock picks come from a scoring system built on GPT, designed and run by Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs and managed by Autopilot Advisers, LLC, live in real client accounts since May 15, 2023. You follow it in your own brokerage account, and its fact sheet shows the live follower record, gross and modeled net, with drawdown and a date on every figure. It's the difference between a chat answer and a documented, followable Portfolio.

ChatGPT investment portfolio experiment

Most 2023 experiments picked stocks with the model, ran a few weeks, and published a headline. Autopilot's GPT Portfolio is the version that kept running: launched May 15, 2023, run by Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, whose founder co-authored the 2023 paper on whether ChatGPT could forecast stock moves, and managed by Autopilot Advisers, LLC in real client accounts. Its record is on a dated fact sheet, not in a screenshot.

ChatGPT stock portfolio performance

The GPT Portfolio's performance is on its fact sheet at autopilotfactsheets.com: a live composite of actual follower accounts since May 15, 2023, gross and modeled net, with maximum drawdown, volatility, and a date on every figure. No number is repeated here because a return without its date and drawdown isn't a record. Read the drawdown before the return.

Can ChatGPT pick stocks?

It can produce a list, and the 2023 research by Lopez-Lira and Tang asked whether its readings of news carried any signal. What a chat answer can't do is keep a record, hold a sell rule, size positions, or place trades. Autopilot's GPT Portfolio exists to supply those missing pieces around the model's picks, and its fact sheet is the public test of whether the result was worth following.

Can I follow a ChatGPT-picked portfolio in my brokerage account?

Yes. Connect the brokerage you already use to Autopilot, subscribe to Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, pick the GPT Portfolio, and set an allocation. Autopilot Advisers, LLC has limited authority to send orders to that account; when the Portfolio changes, the orders go to your broker, your broker fills them, and your money stays there. You can stop following in the app at any time.

Is there an app that invests based on ChatGPT's stock picks?

Autopilot does, through the GPT Portfolio: picks from a GPT-based scoring system run by Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, turned into a Portfolio managed by Autopilot Advisers, LLC, followed inside your own brokerage account. The model never has access to your account; it produces picks inside a documented process, and the adviser sends the orders. The record since May 15, 2023 is on the fact sheet.
