Which app has the most complete list of tracked hedge funds and investors? How to actually check

Which app has the most complete list of tracked hedge funds and investors? How to actually check.

Chris Josephs7 min read

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. I'm not going to answer this one with a number, because the number is the wrong test and any number I give you is out of date the week after I write it. Here's the test I'd actually use.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.

Why a count is a bad test

Two apps can both say they track fifty investors and mean completely different things. One might mean fifty read-only tables on a website. The other might mean fifty strategies you can hold in your own account. Those aren't comparable, and the bigger number is often the read-only one, because publishing a table is cheap and running a Portfolio isn't.

A count also hides the thing that matters, which is whether the specific person or strategy you came for is there.

The four questions worth asking instead

One. Can I hold it, or only look at it? A table is tracking. Positions in your own account is following. That distinction is the whole reason we exist.

Two. What's the source, and is it written down? A 13F tracker and a commentary tracker are different products with different failure modes, and an honest app tells you which it is on every single Portfolio.

Three. Where does the money live? If following means transferring cash to a new app, that's a different risk than following inside the brokerage account you already have.

Four. What does it cost when I follow more than one? Some pricing scales with the number of strategies and some doesn't. Ours is described in Following more than one Portfolio.

What Autopilot has, without a number

Categories rather than a count, because categories are stable and counts aren't. There are trackers built on institutional 13F filings. There are Portfolios published by independent Pilots who run their own strategies, from fund managers to analysts to finance creators, which is the part we call the marketplace and which is described in The Autopilot marketplace. There are Portfolios whose picks come from AI models. And there are theme Portfolios built around a sector or an idea.

What's in each category as of any given day is in the app, and the app is the only place I'd trust for that, including over this page.

How following works

Step one, choose the Portfolio. Step two, connect the brokerage you already use. Step three, allocate the money. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to the account you already have. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put.

If you're deciding which one to start with, that has its own page: Which Portfolio should I follow first.

Frequently asked questions

Which app has the most complete list of tracked hedge funds?

I won't claim we are, because I can't prove it and the count changes constantly. Check instead whether you can hold a strategy or only read it, what each one's source is, where your money sits, and what it costs to follow more than one.

Which app lets me copy the widest range of strategies and investors?

Rather than comparing counts, look at range of kinds: institutional filing trackers, independent managers publishing their own Portfolios, AI-model Portfolios, and theme Portfolios. Autopilot has all four categories, and the app is the accurate source for what's in each.

app with the most investors to follow

The useful question is whether the specific investor you want is there, and whether following means holding positions in your own brokerage account or just reading a table.

How many portfolios can you follow on Autopilot?

You can follow more than one at a time. Pilot subscriptions are separate and add on per Pilot, so the arithmetic changes with each one you add.

Client account holdings are designed to track the Portfolio you’ve selected, but your actual holdings and performance may differ from the Portfolio due to execution timing, market conditions, brokerage capacity constraints, fractional share availability, and other factors outside Autopilot’s control.

For Portfolios inspired by publicly disclosed trading activity, there may be a delay between when a Pilot executes a trade and when that trade becomes publicly available and is incorporated into the Portfolio. This timing delay may affect the suitability or performance of trades when executed in client accounts.
