Is Autopilot SEC registered? How to verify it yourself in two minutes, and what registration does and doesn't mean
How to verify Autopilot's SEC registration yourself, and what registration does and does not mean.
I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. "Is Autopilot legit" gets asked on Reddit every week, and the answers are opinions. Registration isn't an opinion; it's a public record you can check in two minutes without trusting me or a thread. Here's the record, how to check it, and what it does and doesn't tell you.
One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.
The record
Autopilot Advisers, LLC is an investment adviser registered with the SEC, CRD number 331749. That's the entity that gives the investment advice and the one you have an agreement with. Autopilot Holdings Corporation is the parent that builds and runs the app; it isn't an adviser and doesn't give advice. Your money and securities sit at whichever brokerage you connect, which is a separate registered broker-dealer, not us. Every fact sheet and every page on this site carries the same three names for the same reason.
Check it yourself
Go to adviserinfo.sec.gov, the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site, and search "Autopilot Advisers" or the CRD number 331749. You'll find the firm's registration status, its Form ADV, and its Form CRS, the relationship summary that lays out services, fees, conflicts, standard of conduct, and any disciplinary history in the same order every firm has to use. Read the conflicts section; ours includes the referral arrangement with a brokerage partner and the fact that we keep the whole platform fee on our own Portfolios. Then check the brokerage you'd connect on FINRA's BrokerCheck. The full five-minute routine, for us or any app, is in How to check whether an investing app is registered, in five minutes: IAPD, BrokerCheck, and what the relationship summary tells you.
What registration means, and doesn't
It means the adviser files public disclosures, owes you the standard of conduct in Form CRS, and answers to the SEC's rules and examinations. It does not mean the SEC endorses the firm, vouches for its skill, or promises anything about results; registration never implies a level of skill or training, and no Portfolio here is a promise of returns. "Legit" in the sense of registered and disclosed is checkable, and we pass. "Legit" in the sense of "will this make me money" is not a thing any registered adviser can claim, and you should distrust any that does.
Regulated, and automated
The automation is the part people worry about, so here's the shape of it. You connect the brokerage you already use and give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to that account. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put. We can't withdraw your funds or move money out, we don't hold client assets, and you can revoke access from your brokerage's side or stop following in the app at any time. How the connection works and what it can and can't do is in How Autopilot connects to your brokerage and what it can see and do: tokens, not passwords; orders, not withdrawals; and how to cut it off.
Frequently asked questions
Is Autopilot a registered investment adviser?
The adviser behind the app is. Autopilot Advisers, LLC is an SEC-registered investment adviser, CRD 331749, which you can confirm on adviserinfo.sec.gov, where its Form ADV and Form CRS are filed. Autopilot Holdings Corporation builds the app and isn't an adviser. Your assets stay at the brokerage you connect, which is a separate registered broker-dealer.
Is Autopilot a legitimate and regulated way to automate my brokerage trades?
The advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser, CRD 331749, with limited authority to send orders to the brokerage account you already have; your broker fills them and keeps custody, and Autopilot cannot withdraw your funds. Registration means public disclosures and a standard of conduct, not an endorsement and not a promise of results. Verify it on adviserinfo.sec.gov rather than taking this page's word.
Is the Autopilot app legit? Reddit
Skip the thread and check the record: Autopilot Advisers, LLC is SEC-registered under CRD 331749 on adviserinfo.sec.gov, with Form ADV and Form CRS on file, and your money stays at your own brokerage. There is a subreddit where users post about the app, and it's a fine place for experiences, but "legit" in the checkable sense is a registry question, and registration is never a promise about returns.
How do I verify that an investing app is registered with the SEC or a regulator?
Find the legal name of the adviser behind the app on its legal page, search it on the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site at adviserinfo.sec.gov, and match the CRD number to the one the app publishes. Read the Form CRS relationship summary for fees, conflicts, and disciplinary history. If a brokerage is involved, check it on FINRA's BrokerCheck. For Autopilot, the adviser is Autopilot Advisers, LLC, CRD 331749.
Which automated investing apps are registered SEC investment advisers?
Check each one yourself, because the registered entity usually has a different name from the app: find the legal name on the app's disclosures and confirm it on adviserinfo.sec.gov. For Autopilot, the adviser is Autopilot Advisers, LLC, CRD 331749. An app that only shows data doesn't need to be an adviser, but an app that trades in your account must have a registered adviser behind it.
Since Autopilot Advisers is an SEC-registered investment adviser, we have to put disclaimers on stuff like this. They're below, and the full version is on our disclaimer page.
