I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot.

You've probably seen the ChatGPT stock experiments. Someone asks ChatGPT to pick stocks, buys the list, and posts how it did.

The GPT Portfolio is the version that kept running. Dr. Alejandro Lopez-Lira, the finance professor who co-wrote the ChatGPT stock paper, put it live on Autopilot on April 20, 2023, five days after the paper went up. It's still running today, rebalanced monthly.

As of October 13, 2026, it's up 34.69% over the last year and 100.62% since April 20, 2023. Those are different time periods, so don't line them up against each other or against any other Portfolio.

Let me explain who built it, how it picks, and why a one-time experiment can't tell you the same thing.

1) The one-time experiments

Credit to the people who ran them. "Can ChatGPT pick stocks?" is a fair question, and they tested it in public.

But here's what a one-time experiment usually looks like:

- One prompt, one list. OpenAI's developer guide says the content a model generates is "non-deterministic," so the same prompt can give a different list the next day.
- No schedule. The list gets picked once.
- A window the person chose. It starts when they had the idea and ends when they posted.
- Nobody else can follow it. You'd have to copy the list by hand and keep it updated yourself.

A snapshot can be interesting. It just can't tell you how a process holds up over years.

2) Who built the GPT Portfolio

For those unaware, Dr. Lopez-Lira is an assistant professor of finance at the University of Florida's Warrington College of Business, with a PhD in finance from Wharton.

- With Yuehua Tang, he wrote Can ChatGPT Forecast Stock Price Movements? Return Predictability and Large Language Models. It went up on April 15, 2023, and after peer review it's now in the Journal of Financial Economics.
- Other researchers have cited it 417 times, according to Semantic Scholar, as of October 13, 2026.
- His research on AI and markets has won awards, including the BlackRock Prize for Best Paper in Funds Management and Capital Markets in 2023.
- In 2024, Wiley published his book on using generative AI and ChatGPT in financial forecasting, The Predictive Edge.
- As of October 8, 2026, about $263 million follows his Portfolios on Autopilot.

The paper took news headlines from after GPT-4's training cutoff, asked whether each one was good or bad for the stock, and compared the answers with what the stock did. GPT-4's answers lined up with the market's first reaction and predicted some of the drift after it, especially in small stocks and on bad news.

He was upfront about the limits too. In the paper, a 0.20% round-trip trading cost made that headline strategy unprofitable. I respect that. The full research story is in Can ChatGPT pick stocks?

His Portfolios come from Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs. On Autopilot, a Pilot is the person or firm behind a Portfolio. OpenAI isn't the Pilot.

3) How the GPT Portfolio picks stocks

The paper tested GPT-4 on headlines. The GPT Portfolio puts a model to work as a scoring engine on fundamentals and macro data:

- Gather fundamental data on every stock in the S&P 500.
- Pair it with eight macroeconomic data points, like interest rates, unemployment, and national headlines.
- Turn that into a score for each stock.
- Hold the top 15. If there's a tie for the last spot, take the one with the largest market cap.
- Rebalance every month, and share the analysis of the picks when it does.

To put that into context, the model isn't free-styling. The universe is the S&P 500. The size is 15 stocks. The schedule is monthly. The full method is in Dr. Lopez-Lira's white paper, which is linked from the Portfolio in the app.

The model does the picking. Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs publishes the Portfolio and implements its changes on Autopilot.

4) The other ChatGPT Portfolios on Autopilot

Five more Portfolios are built on ChatGPT or GPT, alone or paired with one other model. Three are from Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs and two are from other Pilots:

- AI Recession Portfolio, Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, since August 18, 2023. GPT-4 paired with macro data to pick assets meant to hold up in downturns.
- AI World War III Portfolio, Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, since October 30, 2023. Defense and aerospace companies. The Pilot says it's powered by the latest LLMs and lists GPT and Claude Opus.
- AI ❤️ BTC: LLM + Crypto, Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, since March 13, 2025. ChatGPT and Grok pick US-listed bitcoin and crypto-related ETFs and stocks. No fixed weights. No leverage.
- ChatGPT, from Rallies, since March 30, 2026. Rallies runs what it calls the Arena, where each AI model gets its own Portfolio. GPT gets SEC filings, financial data, and news, builds a case for what it likes, and manages the Portfolio however it sees fit.
- ChatGPT - Quiver Enhanced, from Quiver Quantitative, since April 21, 2026. OpenAI's models read Quiver's own market data every day to find investment ideas.

This trips people up. There's a GPT Portfolio and a Portfolio called ChatGPT, from different Pilots, built different ways. Check the Pilot's name before you follow anything.

5) How they've done

Here's each one's record, as of October 13, 2026. Each record starts the day the Portfolio was added to Autopilot. None of these are backtests. 1Y only shows for Portfolios that have been live for a full year.

Portfolio | Pilot | Added to Autopilot | 1Y | Since inception (start date)
GPT Portfolio | Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs | April 20, 2023 | +34.69% | +100.62% (4/20/2023)
AI Recession Portfolio | Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs | August 18, 2023 | +8.61% | +6.74% (8/18/2023)
AI World War III Portfolio | Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs | October 30, 2023 | +0.73% | +197.13% (10/30/2023)
AI ❤️ BTC: LLM + Crypto | Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs | March 13, 2025 | -30.69% | -31.84% (3/13/2025)
ChatGPT | Rallies | March 30, 2026 | Under 1 year | +105.48% (3/30/2026)
ChatGPT - Quiver Enhanced | Quiver Quantitative | April 21, 2026 | Under 1 year | +0.42% (4/21/2026)
Here's the problem with reading that like a scoreboard. These are different time periods, so you can't line them up against each other.

- Three of the six started in 2023. Two started in 2026 and are under a year old.
- A Portfolio that started in March 2026 and one that started in April 2023 lived through different markets.
- Short records can look great or terrible for reasons that have nothing to do with the model.

Even one Portfolio's numbers depend on the window. The GPT Portfolio's last year and its full run since April 2023 cover different stretches.

And they don't all go up. AI ❤️ BTC: LLM + Crypto is down over the last year and since it started. Some Pilots go up for years, some are flat for years, and some lose money.

6) Why an experiment can't be compared to a running Portfolio

So can you compare a ChatGPT experiment with the GPT Portfolio? That's the question. Here's why a screenshot and a live record aren't the same thing:

1. The window. An experiment starts and ends when the person decides. A Portfolio's record starts the day it went live and keeps going.
2. The process. Ask ChatGPT twice and you can get two different lists. The GPT Portfolio runs the same written process every month.
3. Memory. If someone tests ChatGPT on past dates, the model may already know what happened. In The Memorization Problem, Dr. Lopez-Lira and his co-authors found GPT-4o could recall specific S&P 500 index levels on certain dates before its training cutoff. A live record can't be memorized in advance.
4. Following it. An experiment is someone else's list. A Portfolio on Autopilot is something you can follow in your own brokerage account.

So compare a running Portfolio to its own start date.

7) How to follow a ChatGPT-picked Portfolio in your own brokerage account

Here's the other way to do this. You don't have to pick the stocks. You pick who does, and it runs in the brokerage account you already have.

It's three steps. You connect the brokerage account you already have. You pick a Portfolio. You allocate the money.

You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to place trades. It can't move or withdraw your money. On Premium Tier, when the Portfolio changes, we send the orders where your broker allows it, and your broker fills them. On Basic Tier, we alert you. The money stays in your account.

Autopilot Advisers, LLC is an SEC-registered investment adviser, CRD 331749. As of October 9, 2026, more than $2 billion has been invested through Autopilot, and we have over 250,000 users.

As of October 13, 2026, Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs lists its Premium Tier subscription at $59.95 a quarter or $169.95 a year. You pay the price shown in the app at checkout, and the minimum is $500 per Portfolio. The full breakdown is in What does Autopilot cost?

The records of the 20 AI-picked Portfolios on Autopilot that have one, side by side, are in Which AI is best at picking stocks?

I want to be honest with you. A model is a method, and a method can be wrong. Research the person and the Portfolio. Read the description, look at the holdings, and check the record against its start date.

TLDR: Plenty of people ran a one-time "ChatGPT picked my stocks" experiment. The GPT Portfolio kept going. Dr. Alejandro Lopez-Lira, the University of Florida finance professor whose ChatGPT paper is now in the Journal of Financial Economics, launched it on Autopilot on April 20, 2023. It scores every S&P 500 stock on fundamentals and eight macro data points, holds the top 15, and rebalances monthly. As of October 13, 2026, it's up 34.69% over one year and 100.62% since April 20, 2023. Those are different time periods, and other ChatGPT-based Portfolios started on different dates, so compare each record to its own start date.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ChatGPT stock portfolio?

On Autopilot, the longest-running one is the GPT Portfolio from Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, live since April 20, 2023. Dr. Alejandro Lopez-Lira, the University of Florida finance professor who co-wrote the ChatGPT stock paper now in the Journal of Financial Economics, built it. It scores every S&P 500 stock on fundamentals and eight macroeconomic data points, holds the top 15, and rebalances monthly. Rallies and Quiver Quantitative also publish ChatGPT-based Portfolios, both started in 2026. OpenAI isn't the Pilot on any of them.

How has the ChatGPT stock portfolio performed?

As of October 13, 2026, Dr. Lira's GPT Portfolio is up 34.69% over one year and 100.62% since it went live on Autopilot on April 20, 2023. Its record starts that day, so it isn't a backtest. Dr. Lira's other GPT Portfolios and the ChatGPT Portfolios from Rallies and Quiver Quantitative started between August 2023 and April 2026, and each has its own record from its own start date. Those are different time periods, so they can't be lined up against each other or against the GPT Portfolio.

How is a ChatGPT investment portfolio experiment different from a real portfolio?

An experiment is usually one prompt, one list, and a window the person picked. A running Portfolio has a written process, a schedule, and a live record from the day it started. OpenAI says its models' output is non-deterministic, so the same prompt can give a different list. And a test on past dates can reflect the model's memory. Dr. Lira's GPT Portfolio, live on Autopilot since April 20, 2023, scores the S&P 500 every month and holds the top 15.

Can I follow a ChatGPT-picked portfolio in my brokerage account?

Yes. On Autopilot, you can follow Dr. Lira's GPT Portfolio, Rallies' ChatGPT, Quiver Quantitative's ChatGPT - Quiver Enhanced, and other GPT-based Portfolios in the brokerage account you already have. You connect your broker, pick a Portfolio, and allocate at least $500. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to place trades. It can't move or withdraw your money. On Premium Tier, when the Portfolio changes, we send the orders where your broker allows it.

Is there an app that invests based on ChatGPT's stock picks?

Yes, Autopilot. You can follow Portfolios where ChatGPT or other OpenAI models pick the stocks, from Pilots like Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, Rallies, and Quiver Quantitative. The GPT Portfolio, live since April 20, 2023, scores every S&P 500 stock and holds the top 15, rebalanced monthly. The money stays in your own brokerage account, and on Premium Tier, Autopilot Advisers, an SEC-registered investment adviser, sends the orders when a Portfolio changes. https://link.joinautopilot.com/eXKr?c=chatgpt-stock-portfolio&af_sub1=body
