So I quit my job, moved to New Hampshire, and became a full-time snowboard instructor.\n\nMy fancy dinners in New York City became two roommates and a shared kitchen. I didn't care.\n\nI kept thinking about a little piece of information I learned while working in New York.\n\nThe stock trades by some of the most powerful people in the country (politicians) are legally required to be published.\n\nFor those unaware, the STOCK Act makes members of Congress and senior officials report their stock trades no later than 45 days after the trade. Big investment managers file a Form 13F every quarter listing their US stock holdings.\n\nAnyone can read all of it. For free.\n\nHardly anyone does.\n\n2) Talking about political trades on social media\n\nIn 2022, while my co-founders and I were building our first app, I started covering politicians trading stocks more closely. First it was an Nvidia trade. Then a Tesla trade. Then the dots started connecting, and I realized there was something bigger to all this.\n\nWell, what did I do? I kept talking about it on social media, more and more.\n\nTikTok kicked it off, which led to X, which led to Instagram. CBS put the tracker account at more than a million followers this year.\n\nThrough all of that, the question I kept getting was “Can I trade alongside the politicians?”\n\nI obviously thought it would be a good idea, too.\n\n3) First, we tried to build the Facebook of investing\n\nIt wasn't just me. I started the company with three friends: Brian Schardt, Aaron Langley, and Scott Schardt.\n\nWe each left our jobs. We didn't take a salary for a year to a year and a half. This was during Covid, and we were living in the office.\n\nThe first app was called Iris. It was a social investing app. If I had a brokerage account and you had one somewhere else, we could both connect and get notified of each other's stock trades.\n\nWe set out to build the Facebook of investing.\n\nYou can still see that history. SEC records list the company as Autopilot Holdings Corp, formerly Iris Social Stock App Inc. And if you look at our App Store listing, the seller still says Iris Social Stock App Inc.\n\nBut we quickly realized everyone just wanted two things.\n\n1. The automation.\n2. To follow people better than them at investing.\n\nThat's where we pivoted to Autopilot. It launched in 2023.\n\n4) Why I actually care about this\n\nThe problem I see retail investors have is there are really only two options:\n\n1. They invest on their own, and they're pretty much guessing.\n2. They put it in passive ETFs.\n\nThere should be a third option.\n\nIf you needed surgery, you're not going to do the surgery on yourself. You're going to go to a surgeon. It's the same with stock picking.\n\n5) From public filings to a marketplace\n\nWe started with public filings, because anyone can check them.\n\nAutopilot Advisers builds tracker Portfolios from them. The Buffett Tracker, for example, takes the largest 15 holdings in Berkshire Hathaway's quarterly 13F.\n\nBut here's the problem. A 13F can show up 45 days after the quarter ends. 13Fs don't have a purchase date. They only have the ending date.\n\nIf you're going to put real money behind someone, you want to know how their Portfolio changes and why..\n\nSo we opened Autopilot to investors who publish their own Portfolios. We call them Pilots.\n\nI don't think the best investors are all stuck in hedge funds on Wall Street. Some of them are in Idaho. Some are in Iowa.\n\nIf one of them wants to share their strategy with other investors, the usual options are expensive and slow.\n\nTwo Pilots show you the range:\n\n- Brooker Belcourt. The profile in the app opens with \"I'm a former analyst at Citadel and Coatue.\" The Oligopolies Only Portfolio holds what Brooker calls the 10 best companies with more than 30% market share in growing industries. The profile also links to a public page that lays out the strategy. I respect that.\n- Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs. Alejandro Lopez-Lira is an assistant professor of finance at the University of Florida with a PhD in finance from Wharton. Dr. Lopez-Lira designs Portfolios picked by large language models, and the GPT Portfolio has been on Autopilot since April 20, 2023. I broke those down in Is there an app that picks stocks with AI?\n\n6) How Pilots get on, and how they get paid\n\nIt's not an open thing. Not anyone and their mom can launch a Portfolio.\n\nPilots apply to us through a waitlist. We interview them, have a real conversation, and look at their prior experience.\n\nOur help center lists what we look for: a verifiable track record, a clear investment philosophy, and Portfolios designed to be followed at scale. There's no hard follower requirement.\n\nThird-party Pilots set their own subscription price through our Pilot portal, and they get a share of what their followers pay.\n\n7) How it works today\n\nAutopilot is actually even simpler than people think it is. It really is just three steps.\n\nStep one, you connect the brokerage account you already have. Step two, you pick a Portfolio. Step three, you allocate the money.\n\nYou give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to place trades. It can’t move or withdraw your money.\n\nYou give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to that account. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them.\n\nThe brilliance of it is that the money stays in your account. It stays in your account. It never gets transferred out, and Autopilot can't withdraw it.\n\nThe app is run by Autopilot Holdings Corporation. The advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC, which registered with the SEC as an investment adviser effective July 30, 2024. You can look it up yourself on IAPD. It's CRD 331749.\n\nTo put that into context, more than $2 billion is invested through Autopilot. As of October 8, 2026, there are 391 live Portfolios on the marketplace. We have over 250,000 users, and our app is rated 4.6 on the App Store and 4.7 on Google Play.\n\nKind of crazy for something that started on a ski slope.\n\n8) Where it's going\n\nThe goal hasn't changed. Find the best investors, wherever they are, and let everyday people invest alongside them in their own accounts.\n\nI want to be honest with you. This is not a get rich quick app. Some Pilots go up for years, some Pilots are flat for years, and some do lose money.\n\nDo some research on the investor and the strategy.\n\nHonestly, just go spend 10 minutes on the app. Look through the Portfolios. Find one that works for you.\n\nTLDR: I quit finance, taught snowboarding in New Hampshire, and couldn’t stop thinking about the trades that are legally required to be public. Three friends and I built Iris, a social investing app, in 2020. In 2022, I started covering those filings on TikTok, X and Instagram, and the question I kept getting was “Can I trade alongside them?” Everyone wanted automation and someone better to follow, so we pivoted to Autopilot in 2023. Today it’s a marketplace of Pilots, from tracker Portfolios built on public filings to independent investors like an ex-Citadel analyst and a University of Florida finance professor, that you follow in your own brokerage account.\n\nFrequently asked questions\n\nWho founded Autopilot?\n\nFour of us: Chris Josephs, Brian Schardt, Aaron Langley, and Scott Schardt. We started the company in 2020 as Iris, a social investing app. SEC records now list it as Autopilot Holdings Corp, formerly Iris Social Stock App Inc. Everyone wanted automation and someone better to follow, so we pivoted, and Autopilot launched in 2023. The advisory side, Autopilot Advisers, LLC, registered with the SEC effective July 30, 2024.\n\nWhat is the story behind Autopilot?\n\nI left finance and taught snowboarding in New Hampshire. In 2020, three friends and I built Iris, a social investing app. In 2022, I started covering trades that are legally required to be published on TikTok, X and Instagram, and the question I kept getting was “Can I trade alongside them?” People wanted to follow better investors automatically, so Iris became Autopilot in 2023. It started with Portfolios built from public filings and grew into a marketplace of Pilots you follow in your own brokerage account.\n\nWho is Chris Josephs?\n\nI’m one of Autopilot’s four co-founders. I worked in finance, quit, and became a snowboard instructor in New Hampshire, then co-founded Iris, the social investing app that became Autopilot. In 2022, I started posting about public trade filings on TikTok, X and Instagram. These days I’m the one you’ll see explaining Autopilot on social media and TV.\n\nIs Autopilot a registered investment adviser?\n\nYes. Autopilot Advisers, LLC is registered with the SEC as an investment adviser, effective July 30, 2024, under CRD 331749 and SEC file number 801-130594. Don't take my word for it. Look it up on IAPD. The app is run by the parent, Autopilot Holdings Corporation. Your money stays at your own broker, and Autopilot can't withdraw it.\n\nWhat is a Pilot on Autopilot?\n\nA Pilot is the person or firm behind a Portfolio. Some Portfolios are built by Autopilot Advisers from public filings, like the Buffett Tracker. Others are created and managed by independent Pilots who applied through our waitlist, like Brooker Belcourt, a former Citadel and Coatue analyst, or Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, run by a University of Florida finance professor. You follow a Portfolio, and its page in the app tells you who publishes it.\n\nHow do Pilots get paid on Autopilot?\n\nThird-party Pilots set their own subscription price through our Pilot portal and get a share of the subscription fees from their Portfolios. The split isn't published. Pilots also pay Autopilot an annual marketplace fee, which our Form ADV says is paid by Pilots and not by clients.\n\n\"Autopilot\" refers to Autopilot Holdings Corp and Autopilot Advisers, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. The Oligopolies Only strategy is managed by Brooker Belcourt, an independent Third-Party Pilot. The GPT Portfolio strategy is managed by Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, an independent Third-Party Pilot. Third-Party Pilots are unaffiliated with Autopilot and Autopilot does not manage, validate, or guarantee their portfolios. Not a recommendation. Inside Dr. Lopez-Lira's AI Portfolios, and how Rallies does it differently\n\nI'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. Yes, you can follow a Portfolio where an AI model picks the stocks, right inside the brokerage account you already have.\n\nDefinitely no AI expert here. But I know who is.\n\nOne of the longest-running AI Portfolios on Autopilot comes from Dr. Alejandro Lopez-Lira, a finance professor at the University of Florida. As of October 8, 2026, about $263 million follows Dr. Lopez-Lira's Portfolios.\n\nThe other one worth knowing is Rallies, which gives each AI model its own Portfolio and lets it trade on its own.\n\nLet me explain.\n\n1) Who Dr. Lopez-Lira is\n\nFor those unaware, Alejandro Lopez-Lira is an assistant professor of finance at the University of Florida's Warrington College of Business. PhD in finance from Wharton, 2020.\n\nDr. Lopez-Lira is best known for a paper written with Yuehua Tang called Can ChatGPT Forecast Stock Price Movements? Return Predictability and Large Language Models.\n\nHere's the timeline:\n\n- April 15, 2023. The paper goes up.\n- April 20, 2023. Five days later, the GPT Portfolio goes live on Autopilot.\n\nThe test in that paper was simple. Take news headlines published after GPT-4's training cutoff, so the model couldn't have seen them. Ask it whether each one is good or bad for the stock. Then compare its answers with what the stock actually did.\n\nThe paper reports that GPT-4's scores predicted the market's first reaction, and some of the drift after it, mostly in small stocks and on bad news.\n\nIt also reports that the effect shrinks as more investors use these models.\n\nThat last part matters. An edge everyone can copy doesn't stay an edge for long. Credit to Dr. Lopez-Lira for putting that in the paper.\n\n2) How the GPT Portfolio picks stocks\n\nThis isn't someone typing \"what should I buy\" into ChatGPT. The Portfolio's description lays out the actual method:\n\n1. Gather fundamental data on every stock in the S&P 500.\n2. Pair it with eight macroeconomic data points, like interest rates, unemployment, and national headlines.\n3. Turn that into a score for each stock.\n4. Hold the top 15. If there's a tie for the last spot, take the one with the largest market cap.\n5. Rebalance every month, and share the analysis of the picks when it does.\n\nTo put that into context, the model isn't free-styling. It's the scoring engine inside a fixed process. The universe is the S&P 500. The size is 15 stocks. The schedule is monthly.\n\nThe full method is in Dr. Lopez-Lira's white paper, which is linked from the Portfolio in the app.\n\n3) The rest of the lineup\n\nDr. Lira's AI Finance Labs publishes eight live Portfolios on Autopilot.\n\nSame scoring idea, different model:\n\n- DeepSeek Portfolio, on Autopilot since January 29, 2025. Same grading system as the GPT Portfolio, with DeepSeek calculating the scores. Rebalanced monthly.\n- The Grok Portfolio, since February 4, 2025. Grok picks 15 stocks or ETFs. Everything is held for a month, then a full month-end analysis picks the next 15.\n- Muse Portfolio, since September 30, 2026. Same grading approach, using Meta's Muse. It rebalances when Muse decides to.\n\nA different approach:\n\n- Claude Portfolio, since March 3, 2026. Claude Opus/Fable (depending on which model is best at any given time) runs a multi-agent research setup driven by web search. It holds 15 to 20 stocks or ETFs, and Claude decides on its own when to trade and how often.\n\nThemes:\n\n- AI World War III Portfolio, since October 30, 2023. Defense and aerospace companies, picked by asking GPT how markets react to geopolitical tension.\n- AI Recession Portfolio, since August 18, 2023. GPT-4 paired with macro data to pick assets meant to hold up in downturns.\n- AI ❤ BTC: LLM + Crypto, since March 13, 2025. ChatGPT and Grok pick US-listed bitcoin and crypto-related ETFs and stocks. No fixed weights. No leverage.\n\nBut Dr. Lopez-Lira isn’t the only Pilot running AI Portfolios on Autopilot. Rallies is the other one worth knowing, and it takes a slightly different approach. If you’re picking an AI Portfolio, that difference matters more than which model’s name is on it.\n\n4) How Rallies does it differently\n\nRallies runs what it calls the Arena. Its description on Autopilot says the AI models \"each manage their own live portfolios, making investment decisions in real time with transparent reasoning.\"\n\nEach model gets a big research toolkit: SEC filings, earnings data, hedge fund holdings, options flow, short interest, technical indicators, news, Reddit, and more.\n\nEach one runs its own research and writes its own thesis for every trade.\n\nI respect that.\n\nRallies publishes seven Portfolios on Autopilot:\n\n- ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and AI Hedge Fund, all added March 30, 2026.\n- Muse, added September 14, 2026.\n- AI Skeptic, which tries to reverse the frontier model's thinking.\n\nHere's the difference in one line. With Dr. Lopez-Lira, the model scores stocks inside a fixed process. With Rallies, the model is the whole process.\n\n5) “The Claude Portfolio” (Dr. Lopez-Lira), vs “Claude” (Rallies)\n\nThis trips people up.\n\nThere's a Claude Portfolio and a Portfolio called Claude. They're not the same thing. They come from different Pilots, with different methods. Check the Pilot's name before you follow anything.\n\nModel | Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs | Rallies\nChatGPT / GPT | GPT Portfolio, since April 20, 2023 | ChatGPT, since March 30, 2026\nClaude | Claude Portfolio, since March 3, 2026 | Claude, since March 30, 2026\nGrok | The Grok Portfolio, since February 4, 2025 | Grok, since March 30, 2026\nMuse | Muse Portfolio, since September 30, 2026 | Muse, since September 14, 2026\nDeepSeek | DeepSeek Portfolio, since January 29, 2025 | None\nGemini | None live | Gemini, since March 30, 2026\nSeveral models at once | AI ❤ BTC: LLM + Crypto (ChatGPT and Grok), since March 13, 2025 | AI Hedge Fund (GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok), since March 30, 2026\nDates are when each Portfolio was added to Autopilot.\n\n6) So which AI is best?\n\nI don't know. Nobody does yet.\n\nThe oldest one here, the GPT Portfolio, started on April 20, 2023. Most of the rest are under two years old. Some are weeks old. That's too short to tell skill from luck.\n\nAnd Dr. Lopez-Lira's own paper says the edge from these models shrinks as more people use them.\n\nSo don't compare the model. Compare how it's used:\n\n1. Fixed process or free agent. Dr. Lopez-Lira's GPT, DeepSeek, and Grok Portfolios score a set universe on a schedule. Rallies' models, and Dr. Lopez-Lira's Claude Portfolio, decide what and when on their own.\n2. The universe. The GPT Portfolio picks from the S&P 500. Rallies' models can look at anything their toolkit covers.\n3. Turnover. A monthly rebalance and a model that trades whenever it wants will feel very different in your account.\n4. Time. Each Portfolio's performance chart in the app starts when it was added to Autopilot and is built from follower accounts. Check the start date before you compare two of them.\n\nOne more thing. Autopilot doesn’t design these Portfolios. Pilots do. The AI is the Pilot's tool.\n\n7) How following one works\n\nIt really is just three steps.\n\nStep one, you connect the brokerage account you already have. Step two, you pick a Portfolio. Step three, you allocate the money.\n\nYou give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to that account. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put.\n\nI want to be honest with you. Some Portfolios go up for years. Some are flat for years. A model is a method, and a method can be wrong.\n\nDo the research on the Pilot, not just the model. Read the description, look at the holdings, and check how long it's been running.\n\nTLDR: Yes, you can follow AI-picked Portfolios on Autopilot in your own brokerage account. Start with Dr. Alejandro Lopez-Lira, the University of Florida finance professor whose 2023 paper tested whether ChatGPT could read stock news. The GPT Portfolio scores the S&P 500 and holds the top 15, rebalanced monthly, and about $263 million follows Dr. Lopez-Lira's Portfolios. Rallies takes the other approach and lets each model research and trade on its own. Nobody can say which AI is best yet, so compare the method, the turnover, and how long each has run.\n\nFrequently asked questions\n\nIs there an AI stock picking app?\n\nYes, Autopilot. You can follow Portfolios where an AI model picks the stocks, in the brokerage account you already have. The two main Pilots are Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, run by University of Florida finance professor Alejandro Lopez-Lira (PhD, Wharton), and Rallies, whose Arena gives each model its own Portfolio. You connect your broker, pick a Portfolio, and allocate money. When it changes, Autopilot Advisers sends the orders and your broker fills them.\n\nWhich AI is best at picking stocks?\n\nNobody can tell you yet. Dr. Lopez-Lira's GPT Portfolio, the oldest of the AI Portfolios covered here, started April 20, 2023, and most others are under two years old. That's too short to separate skill from luck. Compare the method instead: Dr. Lopez-Lira's GPT, DeepSeek, and Grok Portfolios score stocks in a fixed monthly process, while Rallies' models research and trade on their own. Then check each one's start date on its performance chart in the app.\n\nIs AI stock picking legit?\n\nThere's real research behind it. Dr. Lopez-Lira's 2023 paper with Yuehua Tang found GPT-4's read of news headlines predicted how stocks first reacted, and that the effect shrinks as more investors use these models. That's a finding about headlines, not a promise about any Portfolio. The practical test is whether you can see the method, the data, and who runs it. Dr. Lopez-Lira's Portfolios link white papers, and Rallies says each model writes a thesis for every trade.\n\nCan ChatGPT pick stocks?\n\nIt can rank them, and that's how Dr. Lopez-Lira's GPT Portfolio uses it. The Portfolio gathers fundamental data on every S&P 500 stock, adds eight macroeconomic data points like interest rates and unemployment, scores each stock, and holds the top 15, rebalanced monthly. Whether a model picks well over years is a different question, and the GPT Portfolio's record on Autopilot goes back to April 20, 2023.\n\nIs there a ChatGPT stock portfolio?\n\nThere are two on Autopilot, and they work differently. Dr. Lopez-Lira's GPT Portfolio has been live since April 20, 2023. It scores the S&P 500 with fundamental and macro data and holds the top 15, rebalanced monthly. Rallies' ChatGPT Portfolio, added March 30, 2026, lets the model research filings, earnings, and news and decide on its own what to buy and sell. Check the Pilot's name before you follow either one.\n\nWhat is the best AI investing app?\n\nI'm not going to rank apps. Here's what I'd check in any of them: whether the AI's method is written down, whether your money stays in your own brokerage account, how long each AI Portfolio has actually run, and who's responsible for it. On Autopilot, the AI Portfolios come from Pilots like Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs and Rallies, and each one's page shows its method, its holdings, and its performance chart.\n\n\"Autopilot\" refers to Autopilot Holdings Corp and Autopilot Advisers, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser.
