Can I use Autopilot with my 401(k)?
Can I use Autopilot with my 401(k)?.
I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. Short answer: a workplace 401(k) is a different animal from a brokerage account, and the reasons have nothing to do with us. Here's why, and what people usually mean when they ask.
One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.
Why a workplace plan isn't a brokerage account
A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored plan. Your employer chooses the plan, the recordkeeper administers it, and the plan document defines what you can hold. You typically pick from a menu of funds rather than buying individual stocks, and there's no brokerage login for a third party to connect to in the ordinary sense.
Some plans offer a self-directed brokerage window, which is closer to a brokerage account, but that's a plan-level feature and it comes with its own rules. Whether anything can connect to it depends on your plan and the firm administering it, not on us.
What to check instead of guessing
Open the app's connect screen and see whether your institution and account appear. That reflects what's actually available to you. If you want it confirmed for a specific plan or provider, message support in the app and they'll tell you rather than speculate.
I'd rather send you there than publish a list that goes out of date, which is the same reason Which brokerages does Autopilot support points at the same place.
What people usually mean
Often the real question is about an IRA rather than a workplace plan, and that one has a different answer that depends on the brokerage and account type. It's covered in Does Autopilot work with a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA.
Sometimes the question is whether to roll a 401(k) into an IRA so it can be connected. I'm not going to advise you on that, and neither should anyone selling you an app. A rollover has tax, fee, creditor-protection and investment-option consequences that outlast whatever you were trying to do with a subscription. Talk to a qualified professional about your own situation first.
The thing worth saying plainly
Don't reorganize your retirement savings to fit a product. If the account can connect, fine. If it can't, use a taxable account or an eligible retirement account you already have, and leave the workplace plan alone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Autopilot with my 401(k)?
A workplace 401(k) generally isn't a brokerage account you can connect a third party to, because the plan and its recordkeeper define what's possible. Check the app's connect screen for what's actually available to you.
Does Autopilot work with a 401(k)?
Workplace plans are administered by a recordkeeper under a plan document rather than being ordinary brokerage accounts. Some plans offer a self-directed brokerage window, and whether that connects depends on the plan and provider.
Can I follow a portfolio in my 401(k)?
Usually the question is really about an IRA, which depends on the brokerage and account type. The app's connect screen and support are the accurate sources for both.
What retirement accounts work with Autopilot?
It varies by brokerage and account type and it changes, so the connect screen in the app is the answer. Don't move retirement money just to use an app.
