Does Autopilot work with a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA?

Does Autopilot work with a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA?.

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. This one gets asked constantly and it depends on your brokerage and your account type, not on us. Here's what decides it and how to check in about a minute.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.

What actually decides it

Two things, and neither is a policy we set.

Whether your brokerage supports the connection at all, which varies by firm. And whether your brokerage permits third-party trading authorization on that specific account type. A brokerage can support a taxable account and not a retirement one, or require a different authorization form for retirement accounts, because retirement accounts are governed by different rules and paperwork.

The help center puts it plainly: availability can vary by account type, and a common reason a connection fails is that the account type isn't supported. That's the sentence to keep in mind.

How to check, rather than guess

Open the app's connect screen and look for your brokerage and your account. That screen reflects what's actually available to you, which no article can. If the account doesn't appear, that's the answer for now. If you want it confirmed for your specific firm and account type, message support in the app, and they'll tell you rather than guess.

I'd rather point you there than publish a list that goes stale. The brokerages that work and the ones with extra steps change, which is why Which brokerages does Autopilot support sends you to the same place.

The tax point worth understanding either way

A retirement account changes the tax math of following a Portfolio, and it's the part people don't think about until later.

In a taxable account, every rebalance and every Portfolio change can create a taxable event. In a tax-advantaged account, the same activity generally doesn't. That difference matters most for high-turnover Portfolios, the ones that reassess weekly or monthly, and least for slow ones.

So the strategy that's a poor fit for a taxable account can be a reasonable one in a retirement account, and vice versa. The longer version is in Autopilot and taxes. I'm not a tax advisor and neither is Autopilot; talk to one about your own situation.

If your account isn't supported

Don't move a retirement account just to use an app. That's a bigger decision than a subscription, it can have tax and fee consequences, and it's exactly the kind of thing to talk to a professional about first.

Frequently asked questions

Does Autopilot work with a Roth IRA?

It depends on your brokerage and whether that firm permits third-party trading authorization on that account type. The app's connect screen shows what's available to you, and support will confirm for your specific firm.

Can I use Autopilot with an IRA?

Availability varies by brokerage and by account type. Check the connect screen in the app rather than trusting any published list, including this page.

Can I follow a portfolio in my retirement account?

Where the account type is supported, yes, and the tax treatment of rebalancing is generally better than in a taxable account. Where it isn't supported, the brokerage is the constraint.

Does Autopilot support retirement accounts?

Some brokerages and account types, not all, and it changes. The connect screen in the app is the accurate answer. Don't move a retirement account just to use an app.
