Can I follow Portfolios in two brokerage accounts, or set one up for someone else?
Can I follow Portfolios in two brokerage accounts, or set one up for someone else?.
I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. Two questions hide in here. One is about your own accounts and the answer is practical. The other is about somebody else's account and the answer is a rule, not a preference.
One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.
Separating your own accounts is a good idea
If you trade by hand and also want to follow a Portfolio, the help center's own suggestion is to keep those in separate brokerage accounts: one for your manual transactions, one you allocate. It removes every collision between your decisions and the Portfolio's, including the repurchase behavior described in Selling by hand while you follow.
Whether you can connect more than one account at once, and which brokerages allow it, is shown on the connect screen in the app. That's the accurate source and it changes, so I'd check there rather than trust a list here.
Following several Portfolios in one account
This is the more common version of the question and it works differently from what people expect. Subscriptions are tied to Pilots rather than to individual Portfolios, so one subscription generally covers everything a given Pilot publishes, and adding a Portfolio from a different Pilot adds their subscription.
The arithmetic and the reasons to be careful are in Following more than one Portfolio.
Setting it up for someone else: don't
This is the part that isn't a preference. Registering or trading in another person's brokerage account under your own identity, or theirs, is not something to work around. Brokerage accounts are opened in a named person's name, identity details have to match, and the help center notes that mismatched identity information is a top reason connections fail.
If your spouse or a family member wants to follow a Portfolio, they register themselves, with their own information, and connect their own brokerage account. That's the only version of this I'd tell anyone to do.
Joint, trust and custodial accounts
Whether those account types can connect at all depends on your brokerage and changes over time. The app's connect screen shows what's available to you, and support will confirm for a specific firm and account type. The general point is the same as with retirement accounts, covered in Does Autopilot work with a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA: the brokerage decides, not us.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect two brokerage accounts to Autopilot?
What's supported is shown on the connect screen in the app, and it varies by brokerage. Keeping a separate account for your own manual trading is a good idea regardless.
Can I use Autopilot with more than one brokerage?
Availability depends on the brokerages involved and your account types. The app's connect screen is the accurate source at any given time.
Can I set up Autopilot for my spouse?
They should set it up themselves, with their own registration and their own brokerage account. Identity details have to match the brokerage profile, and mismatches are a leading cause of failed connections.
Can I have two Autopilot accounts?
If you mean following several Portfolios, that works within one account, and subscriptions are tied to Pilots rather than individual Portfolios. If you mean an account for another person, that person should register themselves.
Since Autopilot Advisers is an SEC-registered investment adviser, we have to put disclaimers on stuff like this. They're below, and the full version is on our disclaimer page.

Autopilot does not hold client assets. All investments are held at the brokerage firm you select and connect to Autopilot. Your brokerage firm is responsible for trade execution, custody, and reporting. Autopilot is not responsible for your broker-dealer’s services, fees, or execution quality.
Autopilot’s services depend on technology systems, third-party APIs, and internet connectivity. System outages, API disruptions, or connectivity issues may temporarily affect service availability or trade execution timing.
Client account holdings are designed to track the Portfolio you’ve selected, but your actual holdings and performance may differ from the Portfolio due to execution timing, market conditions, brokerage capacity constraints, fractional share availability, and other factors outside Autopilot’s control.
For Portfolios inspired by publicly disclosed trading activity, there may be a delay between when a Pilot executes a trade and when that trade becomes publicly available and is incorporated into the Portfolio. This timing delay may affect the suitability or performance of trades when executed in client accounts.
Brokerage and account-type availability are determined by your brokerage and may change; the Autopilot app's connect screen is the accurate source. Accounts must be registered and connected by their own owner using matching identity information.
