What people ask about Autopilot on Reddit, answered by a co-founder.

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. People trust a thread of strangers more than a company page, and they're right to. So instead of telling you what to think, here are the questions that actually come up, answered straight, including the ones where the criticism lands.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.

The fee complaint, which is fair

The most common criticism is that a flat subscription is expensive on a small account. That's correct. A flat dollar amount is a bigger share of a small balance than a big one, and on a few hundred dollars the subscription can be a large fraction of what you have invested.

Run the number yourself before you sign up, using What Autopilot's fee actually means at your balance. If it looks bad at your balance, wait until it doesn't. I'd rather tell you that than take the subscription.

"My returns don't match the chart"

Also a real thing, with four ordinary causes. You invested at a different time than the period shown. You added or withdrew money during it. Your brokerage requires you to approve trades and the approval lag moved your fill price. Or you traded by hand inside the allocation.

That's not an excuse, it's the mechanism, and it's written up in Why your returns won't match the Pilot's.

It's legal, and copy trading is the wrong label. Copy trading usually means mirroring an individual trader's live orders on a platform that holds your money. Here, Autopilot Advisers is a registered investment adviser managing a Portfolio, your money stays in your own brokerage account, and the institutional trackers are built on public SEC filings, not on a live feed. The comparison is in Copy trading versus following a Portfolio.

"Do they have my brokerage password?"

No. You authenticate through your brokerage's own login flow and what comes back is a token. Some brokerages use a signed trading authorization instead. The authority covers sending orders, never withdrawing money, and you can revoke it from your brokerage's settings without involving us. Full detail in What Autopilot can see in your brokerage account, and what it can't.

"The filing posted weeks after quarter end, what's the point?"

A fair challenge, and the delay is real. A 13F can be filed 45 or more days after the quarter closes, so a tracker is always behind. Anybody claiming otherwise isn't working from public information.

Whether that matters depends on the manager. For a fund holding positions for years, a quarter's lag is noise. For a fast-moving one, it's the whole story. That's a reason to read what you're following rather than a reason to dismiss the category, and it's covered in What's a 13F, and can you actually see what Warren Buffett bought last quarter?.

What I'd actually go read

Threads where people post their own experience with the specific Portfolio you're considering, not with the app in general. The complaints that repeat are the informative ones. And our own collection of outside reviews, including the critical ones, is in Autopilot reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Is Autopilot app legit Reddit

You can verify it in ten minutes without trusting anyone: look up Autopilot Advisers, LLC on the SEC's adviser disclosure site, read the Form CRS, and confirm your assets stay in your own brokerage account. The walkthrough is on our page about checking for yourself.

What do people on Reddit say about Autopilot?

The recurring criticisms are that a flat subscription is expensive on a small balance, that personal returns differ from a strategy's chart, and that the filing delay on hedge fund trackers is real. All three are fair and all three have mechanical explanations.

Autopilot app review Reddit

Read threads about the specific Portfolio you're considering rather than the app in general, because the strategies differ far more than the app does. Repeated complaints are the useful signal.

Is Autopilot worth it Reddit

It depends almost entirely on your balance and whether you'd otherwise place the trades yourself. Do the fee arithmetic at your own number first. If you'd genuinely read the filings and trade them yourself every quarter, you don't need us.
