Looking at dub? What to compare before you pick a copy trading app, and where Autopilot is built differently

What to compare before you pick a copy trading app, and where Autopilot is built differently from dub.

Chris Josephs8 min read

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. A lot of people searching for dub alternatives land here, so let me be useful rather than salesy. I'm not going to review a competitor. I'll tell you what dub's own disclosures say about how it's built, what ours say about how we're built, the one structural difference that decides most of it, and the checklist I'd run on either of us.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our disclaimer page.

How dub is built, from its own disclosures

I read dub's disclosures on September 9, 2026. They say the app is owned and operated by DASTA Inc., that advisory services come from dub Advisors, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser, that brokerage services come from DASTA Financial, LLC on a self-directed basis, and that clearing is done by Apex Clearing Corporation. So dub is a full stack: you open a brokerage account inside dub and follow real investors' portfolios there. Those are its words about itself, as of that date, and they can change; read the current versions before you decide anything.

How we're built

Autopilot doesn't have a brokerage. You connect the brokerage account you already have, pick a Portfolio, a hedge fund tracker built on public filings, a Pilot who runs their own, or an AI-model Portfolio, and allocate money. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to that account. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put. Autopilot Advisers, LLC is the SEC-registered adviser, CRD 331749; your broker is whoever you already use.

The difference that decides most of it

Where your money lives. With dub, by its disclosures, you move money into a dub brokerage account and follow there. With Autopilot, your money stays wherever it already is and the following happens in that account. Neither is wrong; they suit different people. If you want one app that is also your brokerage, that's dub's design. If you don't want to open or fund a new account, and you want to be able to cut off an app from your brokerage's side, that's ours. Everything else, who's on the platform, what it costs at your balance, how the records are published, is worth comparing, but that one question usually settles it. I did the full structural comparison, including Alinea, in Autopilot, Alinea, and Dub: three ways to follow other investors, and how each one is built.

The checklist for either of us

Does it hold your money, or work in an account someone else holds? Is the adviser registered, and can you find its CRD number on adviserinfo.sec.gov? Is there a dated public record for what you'd follow, and does it start when the strategy launched on the platform or years before? What does it cost at your balance, converted to dollars a year? And can you shut it off from the brokerage's side, not just inside the app? For us: your broker holds the money, the adviser is CRD 331749, every Portfolio we publish a fact sheet for has a live follower record from its launch date, the fee is a flat subscription, and you can revoke access at your brokerage. Run the same five on dub with its current disclosures and you'll have a real comparison instead of a review.

Frequently asked questions

dub app alternatives

The main structural alternative is following inside the brokerage account you already have rather than opening a new one. Autopilot does that: connect your existing brokerage, pick a Portfolio, and Autopilot Advisers, LLC, an SEC-registered adviser, sends orders to your broker when it changes, with your money never moving. Compare any alternative on five things: custody, adviser registration, a dated record, cost at your balance, and an off switch at the broker.

apps like dub for copying investors

Apps in this category let you follow other investors' portfolios; they differ mainly in where your money lives. By its disclosures, dub runs its own brokerage and you follow there. Autopilot follows a published Portfolio inside your existing brokerage account, with Autopilot Advisers, LLC as the registered adviser and your broker keeping custody. Alinea is a third structure, covered in the comparison article linked above.

Is the dub copy trading app legit?

In the checkable sense, dub's own disclosures as of September 9, 2026 say advisory services come from dub Advisors, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser, with brokerage through DASTA Financial, LLC and clearing at Apex Clearing; you can confirm the adviser on adviserinfo.sec.gov yourself. That's a fact about structure, not a review or an endorsement, and registration is never a promise about results. Run the same check on Autopilot Advisers, LLC, CRD 331749.

dub app review

I don't review competitors, and I'd distrust a competitor's review of us. What I can give you is a fair test to run on both: where your money lives, whether the adviser is registered, whether the record is dated and starts at launch, what it costs at your balance, and whether you can revoke access from your brokerage. Dub's disclosures describe a full-stack app with its own brokerage; Autopilot follows Portfolios inside the brokerage you already have.
