The Predictive Edge: what Alejandro Lopez-Lira's book on generative AI and financial forecasting covers

What Alejandro Lopez-Lira's 2024 book on generative AI and financial forecasting covers, and how it relates to the AI Portfolios.

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. The professor who designs the strategies behind Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs also wrote a book about using generative AI in investing.

Here's what it is, what the publisher says it covers, and what it isn't.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our legal page.

1) The book

The Predictive Edge: Outsmart the Market using Generative AI and ChatGPT in Financial Forecasting, by Alejandro Lopez-Lira, Ph.D. Wiley published it in July 2024. It runs 272 pages, in hardcover and as an e-book.

Alejandro Lopez-Lira is an assistant professor of finance at the University of Florida. The bio for Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs, an independent Pilot on Autopilot, says its strategies are designed by Prof. Lopez-Lira, who holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the Wharton School.

2) What the publisher says it covers

Per Wiley's description, the book is for individual and professional investors who want to use large language models like ChatGPT in analyzing stocks and other securities. It covers how these models work, techniques for reading market sentiment, and how to bring AI tools into an investment process, along with where AI and finance may be heading.

Wiley's author note says the research underlying the book won a 2023 BlackRock best paper prize. That research is the paper explained in Can ChatGPT forecast stock prices?.

3) What the author has said about limits

In a University of Florida Q&A about the book, Lopez-Lira said AI in markets still faces challenges with data quality, transparency, and regulation, and still needs human oversight.

That fits the research. Lopez-Lira's later work shows how models can memorize the past, which is why AI backtests can mislead. More in Why an AI stock-picking backtest can fool you.

4) What it isn't

It isn't a Portfolio, and reading it doesn't put anything in your account. A book about how to use models is a different thing from a process that runs every month in real accounts.

The Portfolios that come from Lopez-Lira's lab are in Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs on Autopilot.

5) How following works

Pick a Portfolio, connect the brokerage you already use, and allocate money. You give Autopilot Advisers limited authority to send orders to the account you already have. When the Portfolio changes, we send them and your broker fills them. The money stays put.

A flat cash subscription, not a percentage of your balance. Per our Form CRS dated February 2026, Basic Tier has no Base Advisory and Licensing Fee, and Premium Tier is $29.99 to $199.99 a quarter or $99.99 to $699.99 a year. Pilot subscriptions are separate and add on for each Pilot you subscribe to. Because it's a flat dollar amount, it's a bigger share of a small account than a big one, so do the math at your balance.

TLDR: The Predictive Edge, by Alejandro Lopez-Lira, is a 2024 Wiley book on using large language models like ChatGPT in investment analysis, from how the models work to reading market sentiment. Lopez-Lira also designs the strategies for Dr. Lira's AI Finance Labs on Autopilot, whose Portfolios you can follow in your own brokerage account.
